s caring horse owners I am sure you will all agree that the health and wellbeing of our horses or ponies must always come first, as I have previously mentioned our animals
have a purpose, therefore as amateur or professional riders or just caring owners we want to achieve the best possible performance from them in the knowledge that they are happy, comfortable and free from pain.
We give serious consideration to both the horse’s welfare and its rider or drivers needs by combining its dental health with correct biomechanics to improve the process of mastication and therefore maximise the benefits derived from its feed and also by maintaining oral health and temporal mandibular joint comfort at all times to enhance performance and often solve riding/schooling problems.
Consider this. . .
. . . How can your horse possibly give of its best and concentrate on its job if it has any form of pain or discomfort to distract it?
To achieve our aims we offer or arrange the following services:
(*see note below)
Occlusal Equilibration. to optimise mastication, jaw functionality, dental balance and temporal-mandibular joint comfort.
Endodontics, to include fillings, tooth restoration and pulp chamber capping
following trauma. (excluding root canal treatment, veterinarians only).
Periodontics, the cleaning and treatment of periodontal pockets, and management of periodontal disease in young or aged horses. ( in conjunction with veterinary surgeon)
Exodontia, the extraction of loose or diseased teeth (excluding, by repulsion, buccotomy or any other surgical procedure, veterinarians only).
Basic Dental Maintenance, the floating (rasping) of teeth to maintain oral comfort by the removal of sharp enamel points or to maintain dentition following equilibration.
Westrow Equine Dental Service Ltd. believes that the horse owning public should expect to receive a service which is up to date and progressive. For those reasons we draw on tried and tested knowledge and skills which have been developed, worldwide, over many years by both animal and human dentists and veterinarians.
We achieve our development through regular Continuing Professional Development provided at the annual IAED conference and via many other sources. In order achieve these aims we work hand in hand with many veterinarians who share our beliefs who put animal welfare before misplaced principles.
You will be told that many of the procedures we use have not been scientifically proven. Science can be used to prove or disprove anything, we say that ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’, our successes bear this out.
*NB. It is currently illegal for any person other than a veterinary surgeon to administer any sedative drug or other medication, (unless by prescription), including Bute, ACP gels or tablets to animals, or perform procedures deemed as acts of veterinary surgery in the pursuance of their business.
All advanced dental procedures shown in this website are/were carried out with the
full co-operation, assistance and supervision of the attending veterinary surgeon.
