Bella:

             An 18 year old cob with deep transverse ridges, a 109, (4th right upper cheek tooth), wedge creating a wide diastema (gap) between 409/411 (4th & 5th lower right cheek teeth) with associated periodontal disease and deep painful periodontal pockets filled with malodorous food debris.

Slight incisor ‘over jet’/’diagonal formation’ causing an acute ventral deviation of the table angles and lateral displacement of the mandible (lower jaw) with associated partial dislocation of the temporal-mandibular joint resulting in palpable TMJ pain, excessive quidding, head shaking, inappitence and loss of condition. 

Treatment;

 

The mouth was corrected under sedation properly administered by a veterinary surgeon .

 

All the ridges were removed and the crown heights balanced throughout the arcades (rows of teeth).

The periodontal pockets, (pockets of rotting feed around the teeth), were cleaned of debris and debrided using air abrasion to remove any remaining dead or infected tissue to leavening only healthy soft tissue ready and able to heal.

 

They were then filled with an antibiotic compound, (supplied & applied by vet in attendance), to prevent further infection and reinforce the healing process.

 

The caries cavity in the 209, (2nd upper premolar left), was then drilled out and prepared before filling with a suitable composite, which will wear at a similar rate as the tooth, to prevent further decay and subsequent tooth loss.

 

Finally, the correct balance between the Temporal Mandibular Joint, the joint at which the Mandible, (lower jaw), articulates with the Cranium, the molars, ( grinding teeth), and the incisors, (front teeth), was achieved by incisor reduction and adjustment to ensure that the correct occlusion, (the contact between upper an lower teeth), lateral and anterior/ posterior movement was achieved.
