How often should my horse have a dental check up?

Every 6 months is best, but certainly no longer than a year. 

In some cases as horses/ponies get much older, this period can be extended, 

but don't forget!

It is not just about sharp points, trauma or disease can occur at any time, and so the longer you leave it the worse it could get.

In an ideal world of course it would help to keep them clean, plaque / calculus often builds up and invades the area below the gingival margin. This can cause gingivitis (inflammation of the gum) and other diseases. As for staining, that is normal, the incisors are covered with a material which is porous and will easily stain.

But remember the horses mouth is a hostile environment and a dangerous area to deal with however well you think you know your horse, so my advice is not to try.

 

So please watch your fingers!!
